Justifications!

I travel in bus everyday and buses are a treasure trove for those who love to study the twists and turns in human behaviour. Today I saw two incidents which I wanted to share here. At the first instance, the bus was full to the roof and everybody was half on top of another. A man accused a college boy of trying to steal his mobile phone from his shirt pocket just because the boy's hand accidentally brushed against his shirt. All men (!) threatened to thrash the boy though he said it was unintentional.
The second incident happened a little later in another bus. A man told the conductor frantically that someone had stolen his money, new currency notes just got from an ATM, and even recited off the serial numbers. The conductor ordered the doors to be closed and told the driver to take the bus to Police Station. After a few minutes, the man found his notes on the floor. When a teenager got down, all started pointing fingers at him saying that he must have been the thief, of course without tangible proof.

In both incidents, the people quickly arrived at conclusions without thinking and proof. And the point I observed was, after the incidents, all men started abusing the 'may-be' thieves and patted themselves on the back for averting a great injustice! They talked incessantly for half an hour about how the children are easily spoilt nowadays and how parents don't teach morality to kids, how they heroically detected 'thieves.'
Now I wonder why people so loudly justify their actions when they find someone else in the wrong? Is it because they feel inwardly guilty as they know they have acted no better than those thieves sometime in their lives? Or is it just their way of convincing themselves of their own superiority by virtue of being good?

Comments

  1. Most of the time, people try to get noticed. Hence, they try to comment on people soo much that, they will not think the consequence of the comment. This is what happening now a days and most of the relations are breaking because of that. I pray to god that, People should get patience and they need to think about the consequence. Also, if they need to comment for constructive purpose, then, it should be personal.

Two separate questions

Guess I am out of touch with everything right now, so no blog entry for many days. From many days, a question is bothering me. I haven't found a satisfactory answer yet. So I'll write it down here. Maybe anybody who reads this may know the answer. "Just because we are journalists, writers, opinion creators and thinkers, do we have the right to judge others? Either personally or professionally?" I think we don't have the right to judge a person, even if we are right. But as writers, we would have to judge others whether we like it or not. And it's very difficult forcing people to think, but that's what we are doing or pretending to be doing right? Another question: "How come life is so simple if you just let it live by itself without bothering much and so complicated if you try to manipulate it or even understand it?" Blessed are the ignorant. We who can understand everything, try not to let anything go by without understanding and thus miss the b

Why?

I miss the complexity of the book and am tired of the predictability of people. Reading each page of a book takes you to a different realm, and often surprises you with its observations. I agree books are written by people, but why do people remain predictable in life and unpredictable in fiction?

Caterpillar or butterfly?

'Caught in a strange land in a net with other butterflies, I'm a caterpillar yet undecided to remain a caterpillar and perish or turn into a beautiful butterfly and live a life full of joy.' Readers don't laugh. But I came up with this one night recently when I was travelling in a train. I tossed and turned, not being able to sleep, upset over unexplainable things and frustrated over events not in my control. Then it occurred to me that our life and its usefulness depends on our decisions -- whether to remain a crawling caterpillar whose existence otherwise is either ignored by all and sundry or who is cursed for just being there and thrown out with a stick, or to develop wings of life and metamorphose into a beautiful butterfly whom everybody adores for its beauty and colour, for its flitting liveliness, for its service to the flower's pollination... I thought that I should be a butterfly, of service to others, but then again I thought, anyway, who really cares?
